1up poll - your thoughts
I can say that I feel that GW is best online game.
But at the same time.. I do feel that Oblivion is a better RPG game.
Curious how others felt about this. I choose Oblivion in rpg due to Bethsoft's ability to create an "immersion" of a world where you feel like you can do anything.
Please note: I love both games and feel comparison is like why apples taste different from grapefruit.

Personally, GW isn't the best game I've played, but it's the only one that I've been able to find continual enjoyment in without investing most of my life into it. I'd say that games like World of Warcraft and Everquest can probably provide a wider variety of entertainment and much better longevity, but that comes at the cost of playing practically all the time. GuildWars lets you compete as a casual player, and the game is more about skill and brains than how much you've grinded and how many raids you've been to.
I've never played Oblivion, but afaik it's a single-player game and I just don't get anything out of those. The only single-player game I ever felt like playing through more than once was Fallout 1 and 2, and I don't want to pay 50-60$ for a game that only entertains me for a week.

Final Fantasy 12 > Guild Wars: Nightfall
But yeah, voted for GW in the online category though.

Bethsoft however fails at balance, which is the reason why any character can get 100%+ chameleon and be a god in the game. godmode = gg oblivion
Back on topic: Guild Wars spoiled most other mmo's for me. I find I can't put up with any form of grind anymore. Ironically I know people who turned away from the game citing "lack of content" and went on to play WoW and Eve Online after that. urns out "Lack of Content" meant "So little grind, I don't know what to do anymore". Eve online is a particularly good example; in this game time, quite literally, equals skill... It was horrid! (for those who don't know: in eve, in order to learn a skill, you select "learn this skill" and a progress bar starts showing you the eta for that skill, ranging from several hours to weeks of real-time before you finish learning)

GW isn't the best online game I've played but I feel that it's a good game on it's own. However, if I see from the angle of RPG, GW could be one of the poorer ones I've tried so far. GW should really be called a fantasy action game with RPG elements, I won't be surprised if Oblivion was much better (eliminating the factor of online or not). I could easily rank the action of GW at top-notch, but for RPG experience, GW just isn't there for me.
For RPGs, immersion is an important factor, GW may look good in graphics but the feel is definitely lacking (and instancing isn't really the issue here). Immersion is really a topic on its own; ambience, music, artwork, cohesiveness of in-game elements/behavior (referring to how convincing the virtual world and everything it contains is), interactivity, etc all contribute to it.

Too bad the Gears of War will win Gmae of the Year, nightfall wasn't nominated for that, even tho it only has been out for less than 2 months, thats pretty good for online mmorpg, don't see any other good ones there

GW is a great action-RPG in the similar vein as Diablo. It provides a very focused, but deep experience and doesn't require to play for hours at a time (although oftentimes that's what happens anyway :S)
I like Oblivion better. It's just much more immersive, the quests are more interesting and just a better experience overall. If my PC were more powerful, i'd be playing Oblivion still. o.O

For best RPG it would probably have to be the first that I remember playing. Alternate Reality both "City" and "Dungeon". They nver came out with the other 2 areana and forest as far as i know. Now this is like 1986 so its a long time ago and most probably wont remember unless u had a Atari 8000 or a Atari ST. Any one else remember this gem of a game????
As far as online I would have to go with good old GW Prophecies

there is no Roleplaying involved in Guild Wars beyond being a Sunspear Captain / Profession such as War/Ranger/Monk etc. It ends there.

Oblivion is an action game with RPG elements.
As is GW.
True RPGs are games like NWN 1&2, the Baldur's Gate series, Arcanum, Fallout, Temple of Elemental Evil, Planescape: Torment, etc.

I enjoyed Oblivion for the modding. I had a lot of fun making a modded face for my own little guy.
Here he is!
If Guild Wars allowed that kind of customization it would be insane!

I wasn't really into Oblivion. Downloaded it at a LAN this summer and spent a few hours playing it, but it was waaaaay to slow-paced for my style (I'm more of a CS/UT guy). The graphics were insane, though, and I can appreciate it as an RPG; just not my cup of tea.
